Methods and graphical codes for the seismic vulnerability survey at architectural and urban scale

Giorgio Garzino, Maurizio Marco Bocconcino, Vincenzo Donato

Abstract

Recent seismic events in Italy in 1997, 2009, 2012 and 2016 have  highlighted the need to develop and use tools for broad scale assessment of the vulnerability of the territory and buildings. The research presents a method founded on the cartographic portrayal of survey maps on the basis
of which it is possible to assess the vulnerability of the urban areas. The experience carried out shows how the urban survey, as well as being an opportunity for the portrayal of levels of analysis and knowledge of the building heritage, can rise to the role of scientific instrument capable of inducing second and more appropriate level cognitive analyses, concerning the relativity of different levels of knowledge and because an efficient cause of derived knowledge.
