The different forms of representation and its implications in architecture

José Leonardo Prieto Fandiño

Abstract

The intentions to communicate and transform reality formulated by human beings are based on intangible ideas and networks that they weave around themselves. These ideas are doomed to remain trapped in the mind that conceived them; only through a materializing act the human being is able to communicate his vision of reality to others. This transition to the material world, which involves an attack on the sharpness of the idea, is known as “representation”. These processes, which in any discipline of human epistemology have specific details, in architecture are absolutely crucial. When the architect chooses, instead of another, a specific mode of representing his architectural logos, he is invoking specific perceptual processes which will not be mere shadows of a possible view of architecture but, despite the obvious imperfect materiality, they will be an indissoluble part of his work as well as
the way in which it will be experienced by others.
